What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is usually thought of as getting your website ranked on Google. But this is only part of the story. Real SEO is about figuring out what search terms (keywords) will generate the most profitable traffic. Because in the end, you don’t just want any old visitors to your site. You want visitors that want your product or service. So SEO is actually about generating profitable traffic through rankings on search engines like Google.

How does SEO consulting work?

When I work with new clients I take you through three steps of an SEO campaign.
  • Keyword Research
Keyword research is critical. The best keywords are the ones that a lot of people are using in search engines, are affordable to rank for and will produce traffic that converts into leads or sales. People are often tempted to rank well for broad keywords like “boats” because on average 4,400 people per month search Google using this term. But you don’t know if the person is actually looking for used boats, boat rentals, DIY boats, boat cruises etc. Instead, a term like “ski boats for sale” is much more specific. While there are only 880 searches per month, you know what the searcher is looking for.

  • Onsite Optimisation
Onsite Optimsation is about perfecting your website’s navigation, links between pages and content. By carefully incorporating the keywords found during research throughout the content of your website in a natural way, Google begins to understand what keywords will display your website in the search results.

I will analyse every page of your site and explain exactly what needs to be done to all of the content to make it perfectly optimised for the right keywords.

  • Offsite Optimisation
This is the trickiest part of an SEO campaign because it relies on the rest of the internet which can’t be controlled. Offsite optimisation is mostly about getting other websites to link to you. The reason this is so important is that Google uses this like a vote. For every link that points to your site, it is a vote in your favour. But not just any old link. Links from websites that are trusted by Google and relate to your industry are far more valuable than spammy link directories and link exchanges that can actually damage your website’s rankings.
